For reasons I don’t want to go into, we had to buy a new server (this week) to replace the new server (last week) for TheJapanesePage.com. Turns out the memory was too low to support our needs. Instead of 1and1 saying, “Sure Clay, I’ll just stick a couple of gigs in there for ya.” I would have to buy a totally different hosting package to get a totally new dedicated server (whilst, and at the same time, paying for the current server). No thank you.
I still have a bunch of sites with 1and1, but after that email, I decided to return to Rackspace. Rackspace has more than excellent service (excellentis maximus) but also a rather large price tag. So I’ll be paying about $50-150 more for a comparable server at 1and1—but getting real service.
Back to the story: Rackspace told me last night the server would be ready by midnight Central Standard Time. Doing the math in my head, I figured that would be 11PM Eastern Standard Time. As a wild and crazy guy, I can stay up that late, no problem. Turns out I did my math the wrong way. Midnight (CST) is actually 1AM here. Not only that, but Rackspace was an hour off not finishing the server until 2AM my time.
So from 2 AM to 3:30 (I’m exaggerating of course, it was actually 3:28AM) the developer in Australia and I were working hard at setting up the file structure and domains on the new server.
From 3:30~6:40 I went to sleep.
This morning I was Skyped at 6:41 and had to call Rackspace for them to set up the DNS on their end. I don’t really remember this call, but my phone says I made it and the server is responding…
That done, I’m waiting until the database is totally uploaded and working. Then we will point the Name Servers in my registrar to point to the new server. Should be done today!
And all without coffee!
